Matson Lumber Company has an opportunity for a Forestry Intern in our organization. Matson Lumber is a strong, established, family-owned company in Brookville, PA. Matson Lumber owns and leases a large amount of timberland and will provide a wide variety of experiences to the Intern. This is a challenging and exciting opportunity to obtain “hands on” experience with a skilled Forester. The Forestry Intern responsibilities will include:

  • Assist with Timber Management to include evaluation of timber species and quality
  • Assist in determining value of standing timber
  • Work on layout locations for haul roads, log landings and skid trails and help arrange and supervise construction of landings and production sites
  • Setup and cleanup of timber harvest operations
  • Oversee harvest operations by ensuring boundary lines are accurate and well documented
  • Arrange, assist and supervise job cleanup activities; dozer work, seeding and mulching, etc.
  • Ensure that all aspects of logging operations project a positive public image of Matson Lumber Company
  • Will practice and learn about Sustainable Harvesting of Timber Primary Tasks:
  • Marking boundary lines
  • Assist with evaluating value of standing timber
  • Set up and clean-up of harvest operations
  • Learning layout locations for logging operations and determining costs
  • Works as a team with other company foresters

Skills Obtained: The Forestry Intern can obtain skills including cruising or evaluating value of standing timber; Intern will learn different methods of determining the value; Intern will gain valuable knowledge with how to find boundary lines and working with land owners; Intern will be directed and coached by a Matson Forester; Intern will also gain experience on steps involved with logging operations including setting up landing and being aware of production costs. Preferred Requirements: The preferred candidate will be working towards at least a 2 year Forestry degree. The preferred candidate will have completed their first or second year. The candidate will have a commitment to safety, be a self-starter, have excellent interpersonal skills, enhance written and oral communications skills and computer skills (excel, word gis/mapping applications). Matson Lumber offers a challenging and rewarding Internship opportunity. The Internship can begin any time after May 6th and end on/or before August 30th. Exact dates will be determined during the interview process and will be at Matson Lumber’s discretion. Hours worked will be 30-40 hours per week for a minimum of 8 weeks. Interns must be ages 18-24.


$13-$15 per hour
